Branding Yourself as an Artist.

just a few spaces left…

If you need help, consolidating your online presence as an artist, your opportunity to hear what I have learned as an artist and Editor of artandartdeadlines.com, is Wednesday, January 13th at The Emporium Center, sponsored by the Arts & Culture Alliance. (continues below)

Learn how to "Brand Yourself as an Artist" with R.L. Gibson!

During the FIRST HOUR: Learn how to create a strategy to more effectively present yourself & your work by discovering what you project & how others perceive you. You ARE your brand.

During the SECOND HOUR: Learn how branding yourself as an artist relates to planning your next show.  Why do some people get solo shows and some can’t even get juried into group shows?  Creativity isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. Planning and strategy are key. Find your niche, and don’t waiver from your brand.

The presentation is January 13th at The Emporium Center starting at 5:30pm. $8 for members of the Arts & Culture Alliance and $12 for non-members.  The Alliance will provide a light snack and water.   For more info, go to: knoxalliance.com.

PRICING your ART.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

My art community is international, but mostly online.  However, most creatives I know really need the company and consult of other creatives on occasion.  The Knoxville Arts & Culture Alliance provides that almost-local community for me. (continues below)

I am proud to be able to provide occasional instruction as a part of their on-going Professional Development Seminar series.  On May 13th, I enjoyed the company of artists from sculptors & painters to photographers & musicians for a workshop on “How to Price your Art.”  This crowd kept me on my toes, and I think we all learned a little something.

Thanks again to the Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville!

SHORT
attention span

I edited my artist resume this week.  Yes, I shortened it.  My resume was so long, that even I was too bored to get to the end of it.  My solution?  Chop it off.  I took out at least HALF of the shows. I improved documentation & details (dates, websites, jurors, etc.) for the remaining shows & arts admin work.

When I read resumes from artists as a part of juried shows or the Featured Artist contest at AAAD, I find they usually contain every instance that their work has been anywhere.  It always screams at me: “I don’t think my resume is good enough, so I am going to overwhelm you with volume.”  It doesn’t work.  So, I finally took the bold step.

My work is good enough.  My experience is good enough.  So is yours.  We are all where we are based on the work we’ve done.  There is no reason to be ashamed of where you are if you’ve worked for it.  So quit apologizing, people.

Chop that resume down to size.

PRESS RELEASE: Arts & Culture Alliance Presents “Do I Know You?” by R.L. Gibson

"Do I Know You" by Xerographist R.L. Gibson(06/18/2014-Knoxville) – The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present “Do I Know You?”, a new series of Xerography on canvas with hand-drawn patterns by local artist R.L. Gibson. “Do I Know You?” uses the body as the ultimate betrayer by appropriating historical, formal portraiture of children and adults in the prime of their lives and juxtaposing those images with a forced consciousness of life-altering and/or terminal illness via layering of historical anatomical drawings. “In the span of one year, my father died in a tragic car accident due to a complication from diabetes, I had a surgery often reserved for women 20 years my senior, and I became the guardian for my 91 year-old grandmother in the end stages of dementia,” says Gibson. “My grandmother always asks, ‘Do I know you?’, and I began to realize this is what we all ask of ourselves throughout life and of our bodies when they inevitably fail us.” Gibson’s retro-influenced works with a tinge of humor will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from July 4-26, 2014, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on July 4 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

R.L. Gibson is a nationally-shown artist, juror and editor that calls Gatlinburg, TN home along with her husband, photographer Jon Ives, and son Oscar.  Gibson works almost exclusively as a Xerographist, producing complicated layered compositions and then hand-transferring these images to a variety of substrates resulting in a unique monotype.  Xerography, as a medium, has neither a standard place in institutional art instruction nor a documented history. Gibson has spent years refining her hand-palated technique. The “skips” are not flaws but the unique result of the process.

Now I See by Xerographist R.L. GibsonIn addition to producing her own work and work in collaboration with other artists, Gibson and her husband also perform as the Appalachian singing duo the Pea Pickin’ Hearts. Gibson also serves as the Editor for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, a fun and quirky, food-themed art blog that offers reviews of emerging artists, shows from great galleries, and FREE Art Deadlines and Calls for Entry as an artist’s resource.

The Emporium is free and open to the public. The exhibition hours for “Do I Know You?” are: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Saturday, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM; and (NEW!) Sundays, July 6 and July 20, 3:30-6:30 PM. Please note, the Emporium will be closed on Saturday, July 5.For more information, please contact the Arts & Culture Alliance at (865) 523-7543, or visit the Web site at www.knoxalliance.com.

SHOT from the HIP

Inspiration Photo for "Shot from the Hip"--a part of the DO I KNOW YOU? series by Artist R.L. GibsonTRUE LOVE
departed

My grandparents divorced when my father was a teenager.  While my grandmother was bitter, Dad felt under-appreciated & Uncle Darryl sulked, I just thought Grandpa was  faux-grouchy prankster.

Our days were filled with ice cream trips, tickle fights, playing house–and the eyebrows.  He had the craziest eyebrows EVER.  He would drag his fingers across his brow bone until they met in the middle.  The resulting woolly-worm brows sent me into an endless spiral of giggling.

He re-married the lovely Anna who developed severe rheumatoid arthritis at a very young age.  She suffered dozens of surgeries & joint replacements only to lose most of her mobility.  He happily waited on her hand & foot.  He carried her to & from bed.  He cut her food.  He colored her hair.

He LOVED her.  I loved him.

At 69, Anna left this world too soon. A few months later after a routine hip surgery, he developed staphylococcal meningitis.  His body just quit.  The piece inspired by this photograph is entitled “Shot from the Hip,” and the show of which it is a part, Do I Know You? opens in July of 2014 at The Balcony Gallery at The Emporium Center in Knoxville, TN.

Gluttony: Before & After

Gluttony by Artist R.L. GibsonLOSING
it

My intent is to offer my point of view with a nod to the humorous.  I can’t help my Southern passive-aggressive upbringing.  I was taught that lessons are easier learned if you wrap them in fluff that makes them easier to swallow.  And…

It would seem that I will never be able to shake the notion.

But, I HAVE noticed a change.  The first image is Gluttony: World’s Fattest Woman, as it hung when Psychomachia opened.  The image below, was my first attempt (that has since been destroyed).

Gluttony first attempt by Artist R.L. GibsonThis circus tent version that I started with certainly had a great sense of humor, but I didn’t love it.  This piece was a turning point for me.  it was missing a religious reference, and THAT is what forced me to make a second attempt.  But as I began trying to re-conceive this piece, I realized that the real problem was that it was simply too obvious.

I’m not good at subtle,
(except by Southern standards)

but I’m getting better…

Thin Line…

I am not one to be drawn to traditional art supplies.  I don’t tend to go gaga over watercolor papers or a specific brand of oil pastels.  I usually just love the bizarre, non-traditional objects that I believe are destined to end up as art–like abandoned lunch trays, old silkscreen frames and Cracker Jack boxes.

My primary focus has been Xerography, and I’ve had little use for pens and pencils over the years. However, as I begin exploring new techniques for an upcoming series, I have to admit that I have fallen in love with the Sakura Pigma Micron pens.

They are a fairly inexpensive alternative to the technical pen.  I am particularly in love with the Micron 05.  You have to use a very light touch, which isn’t really my norm, but the delicate results are just unbelievable.  They are pigment based, don’t bleed or feather, and they are archival.

I’m inspired…
