Horned Dorset Colony.

I am excited to announce I have accepted an invitation & scholarship to participate in the 4-week, Session III Residency (Sept 5 – Oct 2) at the Horned Dorset Colony.  The 250 acre site in the rural hamlet of Leonardsville, N.Y., includes a working apple orchard, hopyard, organic vegetable gardens, waterfall, and miles of walking trails through the hilly woodlands and pastures of a former Horned Dorset breed sheep farm.

Artist R.L. Gibson will participate in the 2018 Session III artist residency at the Horned Dorset Colony in upstate NY!

The founders have graduate degrees in the arts and they have donated multiple houses and 250 acres of land to advance the Colony’s mission and insure its future growth. They also own The Horned Dorset Inn, a long-established and successful inn and restaurant which provides the Colony with a dining facility as well as an elegant venue for fundraising events, exhibitions and cultural engagement with the public.

My hope is to spend time working on integrating my decades-long xerography process with my passion for painting and fiber arts.  I am looking for a path forward, and HDC has generously offered me the time and space to work it out.  I am filled with gratitude.

Thank you, Horned Dorset Colony!

The Bitters 2: We’re Fucked
February 23rd – April 14th, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, February 23rd, 7-10pm

In times of cynicism, disgust and hopelessness, we look for outlets to express our frustrations, as well as our aspirations for action and change. We decided to take one of our favorite exhibitions and reboot it in this current time of disillusionment and subjective truth.  The Bitters 2: We’re Fucked explores how we currently cope with lies, greed, conflict, inequality, and paranoia – with all the sarcasm, and overall disenchantment that made the first The Bitters exhibition so satisfying.

While all ages are welcome, please know this exhibition might make you laugh, make you uncomfortable or even straight up make you angry. Not all work may be appropriate for young or sensitive viewers.

It is DAY 2 the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.  Last time I did abstract work exclusively.  This time I have sworn there are no themes, no rules, just paint… but this is the second bird in a row, ha, but this parakeet looks a bit like he’s headed for the disco. (Note to self: Step away from the metallics.)

DAY TWO: “Perch” (6″x6″ watercolor on 140lb. coldpress)

During the February challenge, I am offering each piece at $25, including shipping inside the U.S., for two days after it is posted.  (DAY 1: SOLD, yay!) You can email me, message me on Facebook or Instagram with your email address for a PayPal invoice & your snail mail for shipping.  First message takes it.

See you on DAY 3…

It is time for the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge again. I am hard at work on a new xerography show, but I have found that a daily painting challenge clears my head, keeps me in touch with a different skill set and has helped me find new peers and collectors.  So, I’m all in for another month of paintings.  Last time I did abstract work exclusively.  This time no themes, no rules, just paint.

These beauties (photo by Ashley Lodge Photography) from the Traffic series found a new home in West Virginia today.  The new owner is loaning them to The Tiny Art Show at the Sir Walter Theatre Gallery in Beckley, WV that opens in December.   Go by and see these, as well as the “Central Park Portland” piece!

DAY 27: Sodden

It is Day 27 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge; today’s painting is “Sodden” (watercolour, 6″x9″).  After having such a hard time yesterday, I feel sort of, well, emotionally hung over.  Artistically, I am a little all over the place.  While I am trying to build a new xerography show, the work I’ve spent a lifetime developing, I am also trying to prove to myself that I’m not a one-trick pony by returning to paint.  Because I am struggling to redefine and elevate my new xerography, I find that any and all failure at painting causes swelling volumes of torturous self doubt.  I get so tied up in expectation that I end up a bit sodden with possibility

As a xerographist, my work tends to be, almost exclusively, representational.  The 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge offers me an opportunity to revisit abstract painting as an alternate voice.

We’re headed in the right direction… on to Day Twenty-Eight.

DAY 26: Whir

It is Day 26 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge; today’s painting is “Whir” (watercolour, 5″x5″).  Despite all the painting I’ve done this month, I started a new xerography piece centered around Columbus Circle, one of New York’s most heavily trafficked traffic circles. Virtually every image of this landmark feature one thing in common –the yellow cab.

Remember those first 15 days of acrylics?  They were studies for a new xerography series.  This could be the start, and today’s painting was inspired by that work.  I’ve been a busy bee.

Today was better than yesterday. What will day 27 bring?
