Pass the Bottle

Inspiration for the DIKY series by Artist R.L. Gibson!Progress…

I am making progress on the “Do I Know You?” series.  I completed the first stage of a piece named Pass the Bottle last night.  And, while I can’t share it until closer to the July 4th show opening (at The Balcony Gallery at The Emporium Center in Knoxville, TN), I can show you one of my inspirations.

Meet Darryl
6 months
March 1949

He was a beautiful child, and as an adult he became the ever-popular sideshow exhibit known as Uncle Darryl.  He was a wonderfully and wildly-inappropriate adult influence on me by most measures, and absentee parent to his only child.  I thought the world was a much better place with him in it.  He helped me successfully make a huge decision at age 13 that probably saved my life.

He physically survived a tour in Vietnam and mentally endured the aftermath of physical injury, PTSD & chemical contaminants with the only tools at his disposal—-a doting mother & many a liquor bottle.

In April of 2006, a heart attack ended the suffering he endured from a decade-long battle with cirrhosis of the liver.  He was 56 years old.  He betrayed his body after his brain betrayed him.  I love & miss him.  I SO wish he were here to be a questionable influence on MY child.

The “Do I Know You?” series will feature an image saluting his battle with cirrhosis as well as an image in tribute his struggle with PTSD & the aftermath of Agent Orange.

PIXELS or paper?

My Fair Lady by Artist R.L. Gibson, 2008decisions
DECISIONS
decisions

As much as I love the physical process of transferring images to canvas, the guts of my work happen as a part of DIGITAL collage.  Since the actual quality of the photograph isn’t my first concern, the photo shoots are all about capturing the content.  So, once again, the REAL STUFF happens in the collage process.  When I tripped across the Call below, I thought maybe I should mix it up occasionally and do a little hands-on collage work.  I wonder if it would alter the way I approach digital collage.  Hmmm…

This piece (above left), dubbed My Fair Lady, is one of a collection of found-object assemblage/collage pieces completed years ago at the request of a retail store in Gatlinburg.  This show (below) is a free entry and an all-hung exhibit.  Sounds like a no-risk opportunity.  Check it out, maybe this one will work for you too…

Virtual Delight

Virtual Delights from Melissa Wolf Fine Arts featuring Artist R.L. Gibson!DELIGHTED,
that’s me

My husband calls me “nauseatingly optimistic.” So when I read this show description, I thought, “What could be more fitting for this nauseating optimist?  I decided I had to enter:

“To dance on the plain of pure pleasure. To share extreme happiness with the world. Enjoyment in it’s purest form.  A dance between the happiest of realities and the imagination.

“What gives you, the artist, great pleasure? What delights you the most? Share it here and share it with the world!” –from MelissaWolfFineArts.com

Virtual Delights from Melissa Wolf Fine Arts featuring Artist R.L. Gibson!Virtual Delight is the latest online showcase for Melissa Wolf Fine Arts and was juried by Roxie Munro, Artist, Author, Lecturer.  And much to my surprise and virtual delight, I was juried into the show and found one of my two images on the front page representing the show.  I’m thrilled, just thrilled.

For those of you hesitating about  entering online competitions, I encourage you to think of them as the art publication opportunities of yesterday.  Art Magazines are rarer and rarer, and online publication opportunities are slowly taking their place.  Give it a try; maybe you’ll be delighted as well.

know you?

I am suspicious of any restaurant called Mom’s or Pop’s. Let’s face it, they are setting themselves up for failure. I promise you, Mom’s Diner’s biscuits will not taste like my Mom’s biscuits. And Pop’s Italian won’t taste like your Pop’s meatballs. But, I get it. There is comfort in the familiar. This next Call has a little something familiar to my readers. Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from The Arts & Culture Alliance for Knoxville Photo 2013. This is a great show run by a great organization. I’ve shown here several times, and the juror is fantastic. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge…

Learn more about Knoxville Photo 2013!JUROR: R.L. Gibson is a nationally-shown artist working and “living on vacation” in Gatlinburg, Tennessee with work in galleries from New York to Los Angeles. Gibson opened her newest Xerography series Psychomachia with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli. She is now working on a text series for show in 2013/2014. Gibson works almost exclusively as a Xerographist, producing complicated layered photographic compositions and then hand-transferring these images to a variety of substrates resulting in a unique monotype.

In addition to producing her own work and work in collaboration with other artists, Gibson also runs ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, a fun and quirky, food-themed art blog that offers reviews of emerging artists, shows from great galleries, and FREE Art Deadlines and Calls for Entry as an artist’s resource.

AWARDS: At least $600 in cash awards will be presented at the exhibition’s Opening Reception on July 5 at the Emporium. Awards include: $200 Best in Show, four $100 Best of Category awards, and a cash award for Best Work by an Alliance member. In addition, the juror will provide written comments on all entries. I JUST ENTERED: Edges & Curves

Enter Edges and Curves today!

SHARP
EDGES
AHEAD!

I just entered a half a dozen of my Psychomachia xerography pieces into Edges & Curves, Nothing in Between sponsored in part by The Haggus Society.  The deadline is midnight (pacific time) on September 1st…so you’d better not waste time.   Edges & Curves, Nothing In Between attempts to bust the myth that the older creative has lost her or his edge.

Learn more about the Psychomachia pieces that I submitted!“In a youth oriented society, the conventional wisdom is that the younger artist is the risk taker and rule breaker. And while those who would follow conventional wisdom believe we soften as we get older, there are those who actually hone their edges to craft a message with more bite and risk because of their station in life.”

I am a member in good standing (although not quite 40…9 months to go) of The Haggus Society, but even if you are not a member, entry is only $12 for SIX images.  You can’t beat the price for a Highland Park, California show. I’ll let you know how it turns out once I receive notification.

You’ve only got a few days left to enter… so hurry!

Wacky Portraits at the Darkroom!

Pieces of Me: Charmed, Xerography by Artist R.L. Gibson!

AND NOW I WAIT…

I just finished submitting 5 entries to the Persona exhibit.  Have you entered yet?

I am a big fan of the Darkroom Gallery‘s curatorial themes, and I couldn’t resist a wacky portrait show. However, I have entered with my eyes wide open.  I am not a photographer…I take photographs.  There IS a difference.  We’ll see how I do.  The last show I entered at Darkroom ended in rejection, but I am trying again.

One of my 5 submissions is Pieces of Me: Charmed.  This piece is close to my heart, no pun intended, and I have never submitted it before now.

Wish me luck!

ARTS in the AIRPORT – No Entry Fee!

Of all the shows across the country that I have been a small part of over the years, I have received more feedback from the Arts in the Airport series than any other.  Note: Some people ponder a masters degree online when they want to take advanced art courses. Whether you were part of this exhibit or want to someday be a part of another exhibit, extra knowledge is helpful.

I was an exhibiting artist in the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 shows, and I regularly heard from fans of my work that they saw my pieces while traveling through Knoxville.

Such a treat it has been.

I am going to work on an entry for this next call.  To all of my fellow TN artists… take a minute to enter.  There is no entry fee and the exposure is great.

ART SHOW TO ENTER

A Tiny peek at Lust from R.L. Gibson's Psychomachia Show!

On ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, I preach the wisdom of not getting complacent…of continuing to enter shows.  However…I have been working on my show Psychomachia for more than a year now with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, and I have worked on it to the exclusion of almost everything else.

So, I really need to take my own advice and decide that it is time that I at least enter a couple of shows.

NO MORE EXCUSES.

I PROMISE.

It has ceased to be about cash prizes for me.  It is all about the ability to show in new places.  Here is one of the shows that I’ve chosen for June:
