As much as I love the physical process of transferring images to canvas, the guts of my work happen as a part of DIGITAL collage.  Since the actual quality of the photograph isn’t my first concern, the photo shoots are all about capturing the content.  So, once again, the REAL STUFF happens in the collage process.  When I tripped across the Call below, I thought maybe I should mix it up occasionally and do a little hands-on collage work.  I wonder if it would alter the way I approach digital collage.  Hmmm…

This piece (above left), dubbed My Fair Lady, is one of a collection of found-object assemblage/collage pieces completed years ago at the request of a retail store in Gatlinburg.  This show (below) is a free entry and an all-hung exhibit.  Sounds like a no-risk opportunity.  Check it out, maybe this one will work for you too…

Hosted by the Arts & Culture Alliance, the first annual Knoxville Photo 2013 was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 photographic works from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, R.L. Gibson, for exhibition in the main gallery of the beautifully-restored Emporium Center at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Photography in four categories:

  • The Human Experience (streetscapes, cityscapes, and environmental portraiture)
  • Our Earth (landscapes, animals, nature – should not include man-made objects)
  • Travel (any subject or genre, taken while away from home)
  • Digital Imagination (digitally enhanced in the camera or in post-production, including composites, montages, abstracts)

DEADLINE: May 19, 2013

NOTIFICATION: June 10, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $30 for up to 3 images ($20 for Arts & Culture Alliance members and students). Up to 7 add’l images may be submitted for $5/each ($4 for members/students).

Learn more about Knoxville Photo 2013!JUROR: R.L. Gibson is a nationally-shown artist working and “living on vacation” in Gatlinburg, Tennessee with work in galleries from New York to Los Angeles. Gibson opened her newest Xerography series Psychomachia with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli. She is now working on a text series for show in 2013/2014. Gibson works almost exclusively as a Xerographist, producing complicated layered photographic compositions and then hand-transferring these images to a variety of substrates resulting in a unique monotype.

In addition to producing her own work and work in collaboration with other artists, Gibson also runs ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, a fun and quirky, food-themed art blog that offers reviews of emerging artists, shows from great galleries, and FREE Art Deadlines and Calls for Entry as an artist’s resource.

AWARDS: At least $600 in cash awards will be presented at the exhibition’s Opening Reception on July 5 at the Emporium. Awards include: $200 Best in Show, four $100 Best of Category awards, and a cash award for Best Work by an Alliance member. In addition, the juror will provide written comments on all entries. Awards are as designated by the juror, whose decision is final.

SALES: Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by the Arts & Culture Alliance, who retains a 25% commission (20% for cash and check sales).

Most professional artists rely on art sales for income. Most emerging artists hope for art sales for extra income for supplies. Many prestigious art shows come with publicity and great printed materials, but lots of artists never get to go to out-of-town openings due to financial constraints.

So, how do you afford to produce
artwork, submit work, get to
attend the openings and still
afford to eat dessert?

Maybe this Call for Submissions from The Soap Factory could be the answer to your art entry problems. The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit.  Sign me up!

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: The Soap Factory

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions are typically comprised of 8-10 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

Visit The Soap Factory online!They have no climate control, air conditioning or permanent heating system; please bear this in mind when submitting your work. Projects by individual artists that propose to use the entire 12,000 sq feet of gallery space are always encouraged.

They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

DEADLINE: November 30, 2010. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions so this is a POSTMARK deadline.

REVIEW DATES: Submissions are reviewed for exhibition between May 1st and October 31st.

They may keep your submission on file for up to 8 months. Do not call or email to check on your submission. The Soap Factory does not return work. Please only send materials that you do not need to be returned.

IMAGES: Up to ten color images of your work on disc. Digital images must be Mac compatible (jPeg, tif, pdf) not less than 1500×2100 pixels. Each submitted image MUST ALSO BE PRINTED IN HARD COPY. Submissions that do not include hard copy images WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.

RESUME, artist statement and project description/ proposal.

Please submit any video on DVD. DVD must be in Zone 1 format (readable in USA).

At ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, I spend a lot of time preaching about the benefits of Art Publication and why you should enter art shows.  So, it only seems fitting that I publish my occasional results that address both.

And, while I understand that one rotten apple can spoil the barrel. Rest assured, I make every effort to sniff out the bad apples. To my knowledge, I have never post a fraudulent or scam call. Let me know if I ever do.

On that note, I am always hesitant to post calls for online exhibitions because they tend to strike my readers as a way to lose their cash for little benefit in return. However I must say, I am a big fan of art organizations that lay it all out there. Take today’s call for example.

Austin Museum of Digital Art The Austin Museum of Digital Art says, “Since AMODA currently has no permanent exhibition space, there are some types of visual art that are more practical for us to present than others. In particular, we are seeking artwork to display in our Digital Showcase Series. The Digital Showcase is a one night only event featuring live electronic music and visual art in a social setting, such as a bar or nightclub.” I get it, and I appreciate the fact that the call isn’t hidden in some vague archaic language.

Austin is known for its innovative art vision, and I love the idea of bringing art to the public instead of coercing the public to come see art. Here’s the call:

The Austin Museum of Digital Art is open to receiving a wide range of visual art submissions, including anything that they would define as digital art. Please see their About Digital Art page for more information.

The forms of art that work well in these events are video art, computer animation, digital prints, performance pieces, live video, multimedia installations, and interactive pieces. To submit visual art for their Digital Showcases Series, please send an email to visual.art@amoda.org. (See the submission guidelines below for more info on what to include in your email.)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Examples of your work:

  • when you send a submission, please include examples of your art, music, etc.
  • they strongly prefer a link to a website where we can view or listen to examples of your work
  • if this is not possible, you may also attach images, audio files, or short video files to your email

Short bio and work description:

  • it would be helpful to include a short bio and description of your work
  • this may include your history as an artist, where your work has previously been shown, where you have previously performed, etc.
  • it may also include details on the concept/subject of your work, and any special display considerations
  • they prefer a link to a website where they can read this information, but you may also include it in the body of your email, or as an attachment

Submission replies:

  • they make every effort to read and catalog all submissions, and consider them for future events
  • however, AMODA is an all-volunteer organization and cannot guarantee a reply to every submission
  • even if you do not receive a reply, please feel free to send additional submissions in the future, as you create new work (this is an exception to most gallery rules)
