Another day has passed, and I haven’t found any additional color. This one feels more successful than yesterday, but it is still a lateral move.

As a xerographist, my work tends to be, almost exclusively, representational. The 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge offers me an opportunity to revisit abstract painting as an alternate voice. In my mother’s east Tennessee town they re-routed a street off one of the local traffic circles. And, instead of tearing up the old street or just blocking it off, they covered it with 6″ of top soil and planted grass. so many of us do the same, re-route then cover up the past instead of fixing it or addressing it in any way. The traffic circle metaphor just never disappoints.

As a xerographist, my work tends to be, almost exclusively, representational. The 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge offers me an opportunity to revisit abstract painting as an alternate voice. Cadmium red seems to be sticking around. Red is my happy place, but I started painting to find a voice for some anger. So, regardless of the success of a painting, I’m struggling with the ability to express anger. I have always been, what my husband calls “nauseatingly optimistic”, and that isn’t a bad thing, to me. But, it is sometimes unproductive. This painting feels unproductive. My paintings, like myself, are a work in progress. Stick with me.

If red is my happy place and yellow is angry, orange must necessarily be the narrow band of safety between the two, right? I struggle with complementary color use, but it felt right here. Today’s traffic circle spiral is dedicated to those seeking safety from hurricane Irma. Be safe. And, with unbleached titanium & cadmium red newly purchased, next week might take a turn. Stay tuned.

More angry yellow today surrounded by the rosy glow of the ease of submission to apathy just on the perimeter of my vision. Round & round the I go on the traffic circle meeting road blocks at every turn. I will find my way — in time.

As a xerographist, my work tends to be, almost exclusively, representational. The 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge offers me an opportunity to revisit abstract painting as an alternate voice. To be more precise, I need a way to voice my anger. This work is as close as I’ve come. Typically red is used as symbolic of anger, but red is my happy place. Yellow, on the other hand, seems aggressive in that southern way one smiles with gritted teeth. This piece was finished with clinched jaw. It is a good start.

I’ve had a few questions about the “degree” names. The number comes from the approx. angle between the proverbial streets of gold (or silver) that intersect with our symbolic traffic circle. Today’s palette has changed dramatically, but I am planning on lightening it up more for day seven.

I told you about my paper indulgences–art books. I received a book in the mail that is, well, sort of priceless. It is kind of a color by numbers without the numbers or paint kits. Abstracts in Acrylics [With Tracings] By Dani Humberstone ( 2011 ). It comes with tracings of the artist/author’s abstract work along with step by step instructions on how to recreate her work. This is a perfect example of my magpie ways. I am attracted to the colorful and shiny and vibrant. And, I don’t always pay attention to the details. In this case, I fell in love with the color in the sample pages and had no idea what I was getting. This will be a FANTASTIC way to to ease myself out of a future art rut. Fun. I have a funny feeling about this one.
