Horned Dorset Colony.

I am excited to announce I have accepted an invitation & scholarship to participate in the 4-week, Session III Residency (Sept 5 – Oct 2) at the Horned Dorset Colony.  The 250 acre site in the rural hamlet of Leonardsville, N.Y., includes a working apple orchard, hopyard, organic vegetable gardens, waterfall, and miles of walking trails through the hilly woodlands and pastures of a former Horned Dorset breed sheep farm.

Artist R.L. Gibson will participate in the 2018 Session III artist residency at the Horned Dorset Colony in upstate NY!

The founders have graduate degrees in the arts and they have donated multiple houses and 250 acres of land to advance the Colony’s mission and insure its future growth. They also own The Horned Dorset Inn, a long-established and successful inn and restaurant which provides the Colony with a dining facility as well as an elegant venue for fundraising events, exhibitions and cultural engagement with the public.

My hope is to spend time working on integrating my decades-long xerography process with my passion for painting and fiber arts.  I am looking for a path forward, and HDC has generously offered me the time and space to work it out.  I am filled with gratitude.

Thank you, Horned Dorset Colony!

DAY 7: 42°

"42°" acrylic & silver leaf on 5″×7″ unstretched canvas by R.L. Gibson
“42°” (acrylic & silver leaf on 5″×7″ unstretched canvas) by R.L. Gibson

It is Day 7 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge sponsored by painter Leslie Saeta.  My seventh offering is “42º” acrylic & silver leaf on 5″×7″ unstretched canvasAvailable for $50.

As a xerographist, my work tends to be, almost exclusively, representational.  The 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge offers me an opportunity to revisit abstract painting as an alternate voice.  I spend 99% of my time working on the paint, but the 1% spent on the circle and street make all the difference.  The other 1%.

42º is seventh of a number of paintings inspired by traffic circles:  “As a frequent traveler, I am both comforted and amused by the familiar behaviors found while traversing the traffic circle.  Well-intentioned drivers lean forward to afford themselves a better view of street signs, use their right turn signal despite all options being right turns, momentarily hit the brakes not quite certain of their choice before barreling ahead often without noticing the presence or location of other drivers on the circle or having to go ’round again because they missed the mark the first time.  It is sort of a perfect metaphor for navigating life.”

Next stop? Day Eight.

A Good Egg.

"A Good Egg: Illustrations by R.L. Gibson" opens April 6th at Hale Springs Inn in Rogersville, TN.

“Back when we grew our own food, farming was, by its very nature, organic. Today, big agriculture has us convinced that organics are hipster privilege. Cashiers struggle to identify a turnip root. Children don’t know milk comes from cows. There are nineteen ingredients in McDonald’s french fries. We are more separated from our food than ever. Daily, we consume food about which we know nothing. By choice. We want food cheap & easy even if it kills us. We will pay $5 for drive-thru coffee but not for a dozen fresh eggs. “A Good Egg” asks the metaphorical question, can we recover our connection to food? What amount of ornament, decoration or spin does it take to make real food, food again?” – R.L. Gibson

“A Good Egg” is a developing series of 23 illustrations
